About WRAIR:
WRAIR's focus on research for the soldiers
affects all aspects of its operations because
military medical research priorities differ from
those of the civilian sector. WRAIR scientists
have a unique understanding of military
operations and environments, including the
stresses and exposures troops encounter and the
performance requirements of a deployed military
force.
Despite WRAIR's focus on the military, its
research has been used to solve nonmilitary
medical problems around the world. Its history
is filled with the life-saving or life-enhancing
discoveries of distinguished scientists.
Dengue
Dengue, a disease caused by a virus and
transmitted by mosquitoes, is a threat to
soldiers deployed to tropical and subtropical
areas of the world. It is periodically
reintroduced into the United States. In
Australia and the Asian region, incidences are
now growing rapidly. Candidate dengue
vaccines are produced and tested at WRAIR, which
has considerable expertise in this area.
Dengue fever has been a significant threat in
recent deployments to Haiti, Somalia, and other
tropical areas of the world. The yellow band
represents areas of potential dengue
transmission.
