Avantogen's Hawaii Biotech Inc. receives clinical trial support from prestigious Walter Red Army Institute of Research

01st September 2008 Brisbane and Hawaii

Avantogen Ltd (ASX: ACU) is pleased to announce additional support for the Dengue vaccine program developed by Hawaii Biotech Inc, in which Avantogen holds a significant investment stake. The Dengue clinical trial will be conducted as part of a broader trial at the clinical trials centre of the US Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR).  This institution has a well recognised competency in emerging infectious disease and considerable experience with Dengue fever.

Avantogen believes that a partnership with a reputable organisation such as WRAIR gives further validation of the Hawaii Biotech Inc vaccine technology platform and the actual dengue vaccine candidate that has been developed. Furthermore, Avantogen (and Hawaii Biotech Inc) have also gained a potential partner to accelerate the program.  Next steps could be the dosage of first subjects with the proprietary, recombinant-DNA-based vaccine candidate being developed by Hawaii Biotech Inc.

According to Dr William Ardrey, CEO of Avantogen Ltd, “Dengue continues to be a major health challenge, as well as a large commercial market. Dengue fever is now impacting Australia and the markets to which Australians travel to frequently.  This advance on the Dengue program follows commencement of Phase I trials on the West Nile virus in June 2008 with the appropriate USFDA clearances. “

Dengue fever is a major public health issue worldwide, caused by a virus that is a close relative to West Nile Virus. Many experts estimate the addressable market approaching $5 billion annually.  Also, various military organizations face challenges with Dengue as they conduct operations or humanitarian efforts in certain countries where Dengue is a growing problem.

Dr Ardrey added “This is an opportunity to validate the recombinant DNA manufacturing platform, the Hawaii Biotech vaccine and the approach with a highly respected partner.”

About Avantogen Limited:

Avantogen Ltd (ASX: ACU) is developing and commercializing drugs and nutraceuticals in the fast growing oncology and vaccine markets. Following a company restructure in mid-2007, the company has announced a number of high-value commercial licensing revenue partnerships with leading US biotechnology players, and seen strong clinical and revenue generation success with its pipeline of promising proprietary products.

The company successfully commenced re-trading on 3 October 2007, and is poised for a prosperous and promising future, for the benefit of current and future shareholders. The parent company, and its affiliates, has recently completed a number of positive, revenue transactions, which included collection of multi-million dollar upfront payments and execution of licensing documentation including future milestone payments and substantial future royalty streams.  The Dengue program referenced in this announcement has been financially supported by PDVI/Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and also has attracted support of Prof Ian Frazer, recently Australian of the year and expert in the vaccine area.

About WRAIR:

WRAIR's focus on research for the soldiers affects all aspects of its operations because military medical research priorities differ from those of the civilian sector. WRAIR scientists have a unique understanding of military operations and environments, including the stresses and exposures troops encounter and the performance requirements of a deployed military force.

Despite WRAIR's focus on the military, its research has been used to solve nonmilitary medical problems around the world. Its history is filled with the life-saving or life-enhancing discoveries of distinguished scientists.

Dengue

Dengue, a disease caused by a virus and transmitted by mosquitoes, is a threat to soldiers deployed to tropical and subtropical areas of the world. It is periodically reintroduced into the United States. In Australia and the Asian region, incidences are now growing rapidly.  Candidate dengue vaccines are produced and tested at WRAIR, which has considerable expertise in this area.

Dengue fever has been a significant threat in recent deployments to Haiti, Somalia, and other tropical areas of the world. The yellow band represents areas of potential dengue transmission.
